This song is a horribly sexist song and to someone who is a feminist it is very depressing to see this song become so popular. This song perfectly lays out all the bad things that music has to say about women, and the music video just serves to amplify the songs homage to sexist culture. This is a song and video that you watch and almost wish that it was a satirical commentary, but unfortunately it is not. Many women and especially feminists have been outraged at this song and video and there have been many video responses and parodies posted on youtube that serve to point out just exactly what is wrong with this video. One of the best parodies/social commentary videos that was made in response to this video was the feminist response comically called “Defining lines” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC1XtnLRLPM .
There is definitely problems with sexism in music, and for the most part the divisions are getting better, but every now and then you get a song like this that just drags us back into the stone age and insults many people and is unapologetic about it. Personally I don’t think that the public response was outraged enough in response to this song, and I am very disappointed that it gained so much popularity, so that the artist is not discouraged from having this same point of view and others aren’t discouraged from making more songs that encourage this view of women.
